Both are really lovely!
ReplyDeleteI agree that both records are very good but I have to say I do not like 7 inch records very much. They are good for an old fashioned dukebox but not much fun to mix with, don't sound as good as a well pressed 12 & the cheap paper covers do not last or protect the precious (see expensive) delicate vinyl. If I pay about £10 including postage for a records I'd like to receive a well packaged 12" in a polylined paper sleeve & spined cover to protect it for all time.
ReplyDeleteRed Motorbike 7s come in a plastic sleeve to serve and protect! :)
ReplyDeleteI think, if I am to spend any money, especially that earned furtively in dark alleyways administrating services to strangers; the least I expect from my record purchases is for them to come bound in halal leather with the catalogue number inscribed in gold leaf and be delivered on a velvet cushion by some midgets. Anything less I'm afraid and I'm writing to complain to Jonathan King.

ReplyDeleteEddie: just to confirm I did actually buy the Red Motorbike 7 as both sides are excellent. Keep up the good work.
ReplyDeleteCheers Rich! I really appreciate the support!!
ReplyDeleteIn response to above, it should be noted from a mastering standpoint as long as the 7" record is in the 4 minute-ish or under time range it will sound as good as any 12" at 45rpm. Also, the 45rpm give you a cleaner signal to noise ratio...in laymans terms that means less surface noise and a more robust sound. All of Ed's 7" vinyl is of high quality pressing based on what I have and play.
ReplyDeleteFrom a mix standpoint, I play/mix alot of Reggae, Soul & Funk so handling on the turntable is not an issue. If you have problems Rich I would suggest you seek a heavier needle like a Shure M44-7, possibly try other slipmats that are thinner but still have grab like Butter Rugs, Magic Carpets or ESDJCO: Aero2...and if all else fails practice up.
If you're sticking 7" records in your 12" record bag or crate...or even a little pocket on your record bag the sleeves are probably going to get fucked up. Invest in little 7" case and as long as it's not over stuffed the sleeves will last just fine. Jazzman & Soul Jazz both have small inexpensive 7" bags that are for sale on Juno last I checked. Or even cheaper and better, buy a plastic Craftsman or Kobalt tool box and line it with kitchen shelving pad. That'll be lite weight, lockable and fits under most airline seats if you're traveling with 7's records.
